Helpful hints to make travel easier
These are the things previous travels said they found helpful or wish they knew about before traveling. These may be familiar to you, but if they are not we hope it makes your journey easier.
Communicating
Perhaps the most challenging aspect is communication
Learn how to say thank you and hello in the local language--it will go a LONG way in connecting with the local population.
Make sure you know how to use Google Translate (or similar app), especially the camera feature as it helps to make reading menus and signs much easier. Do not expect to have English language options
Money/ Finances
The most widely used credit card in the world is MasterCard. Amex is the most limiting.
Be sure to know pin codes to debit crads and credit cards. Not all ATMs accept credit cards for cash with drawal so always come prepared with a debit card in addition to any credit card you hope to use.
Consider opening a second bank account that links to your first. If you lose your card or your account is hacked you can still access funds
When using ATMs most give you an English language option. Once you are processing your request for money they will ask you to chose local currency or conversion (to USD). Chose local currency as the exchange is better. This is not asking if you want money dispensed in local currency or USD. Money is only dispensed in local currency.
Download a currency conversion chart to have wit you. Its makes shopping easier than trying to convert in your head.
Packing/ Luggage
The rule of thumb is pack what you think you'll nrrd then cut it in half. half the luggage and twice the money-- a rule that has served me well.
As for luggage space is often limited, especially on trips that change locations frequently. Limitations will be made clear for each trip and strictly adhered to.
Help with luggage isnt always available so you should be able to carry your luggage up two flights of stairs or the equivalent of three blocks. If you cant do this you've probably over packed. the less is more (helpful) rule definitely applies here.
Phone/ Internet
Most phone companies offer international plans for about $10 a day. Being ale to stay in touch with fellow travelers is vital so consider this a part of the trip. days that the group is together you can keep phone on airplane mode and this cost will not be incurred.
Do not keep your phone on airplane mode when separate from the group.
Medicine
Always travel with Imodium, tums, cough drops and keep perscription medicines in their bottles. Ask your pharmacist for small labeled bottles if they come in large bottles, it saves room and keeps you compliant with the rules various countries may impose.
